Faculty Profile
Biography
Hi Everyone,
I am Dr. Robin Wood. I graduated from NSU with my BSN in 1999, an MSN in 2002, a Post Masters Certificate in 2007, and in August 2022 I graduated with my Doctorate of Nursing Practice. I am an assistant professor teaching pediatrics to BSN students here at NSU. I feel like I’ve come full circle.
I started my career as a pediatric nurse and was inspired to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. After working as a pediatric nurse practitioner in private practice, I worked in the pediatric pulmonology group at LSUHSC in Shreveport (now Ochsner’s). It was during this time that the need for a Family Nurse Practitioner degree became necessary to treat adult cystic fibrosis patients. During clinicals for the FNP, I fell in love with rural health. I then worked in rural health for more than 12 years as a pediatric and family nurse practitioner. It was the needs of the rural community that inspired me to return to NSU to pursue the DNP degree. I intended to work as adjunct faculty, however, the opportunity to teach full-time in pediatrics (my true practice area of choice) became available and offered me the opportunity to transition from practice to nursing educator.
I hope to share my knowledge and experience as a nurse in the role of assistant professor for years to come. I plan to advocate for the healthcare needs of the rural population of Louisiana.
On a more personal note – I consider myself a friendly, outgoing, God-fearing woman. I’ve been married for 30 years to my wonderful husband, Larry, I’m mother to 4 fantastic grown men who now have families of their own. I love doing anything outside. Gardening, swimming and 4-wheeing in the mountains, fishing Lake Bisitneau, or “down South” at Hackberry, LA. are my favorites. My husband and I love road tripping, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Alabama for the most part.
I see myself as a very positive, compassionate encourager and love to see others succeed. I love it when a person becomes empowered by knowledge I’ve imbued into them whether it is a NP student or a patient who needs to have a better understanding of their health I knew from the time I was a child that I wanted to be a nurse. I have absolutely loved every minute in nursing whether as a bedside RN, a NP or now as a BSN educator.
