Biography

Dana C. Clawson, DNS, WHNP, APRN, CNE is a Professor of Doctoral Studies at Northwestern State University (NSU). Dr. Clawson began her career in higher education in 1999 at a vocational-technical LPN program. In 2000, she began teaching at Northwestern State as an assistant professor of nursing in the Associate degree nursing program. Dr. Clawson continued teaching at NSU in both the baccalaureate and master's degree programs. During her tenure at NSU Dr. Clawson has served as an Undergraduate Coordinator, Graduate Coordinator, Graduate Director and Dean. In 2019, Dr. Clawson earned nurse educator certification (CNE).  

Dr. Clawson became a Registered Nurse in 1990 after earning her associates degree in nursing from Northwestern State.  Later she returned to Northwestern State and earned baccalaureate and masters degrees with a clinical focus as a women's health nurse practitioner. Dr. Clawson began her advanced nursing practice career as a women's health nurse practitioner in 2000, and has provided comprehensive women's health care in a large urban obstetric-gynecologic practice and small free-services health center since August, 2000. Dr. Clawson maintains part-time faculty practice as a WHNP.

In 2009 Dr. Clawson earned her Doctor of Nursing Science degree from Louisiana State University. Her research focus was on Pre-Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Stress and their Perceptions of Nurse Educator Caring.  Dr. Clawson's research interests include the psychosocial aspects of nursing education and higher education, i.e. student-success, stress, anxiety, resilience, empathy, emotional intelligence, etc., as well as numerous clinical aspects of advanced nursing practice. Dr. Clawson has been the primary investigator for over $2,000,000.00 in grant funding for advanced practice nursing education and served as major professor for over 60 graduate nursing students. 

Dr. Clawson is a member of the Louisiana State Nurses Association, Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, and Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Clawson has served as Chair of Martin Luther King Health Center's Board of Directors and Chair of the Louisiana Council of Administrators of Nursing Education. Dr. Clawson is currently a site visitor for a national accrediting body (CCNE) and a member of the Willis Knighton Nurse Residency Advisory Board.
