Biography

Jennifer Pulling was appointed Assistant Professor of Music Education at NSU in Fall 2023. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate music education courses, serves on graduate committees and supervises student teacher residency. When time allows, she volunteers her time as a member of the NSU Fall Winds and Cane River Singers. 

Dr. Pulling has been an active music educator and musician for 26 years. During that time, she spent 17 years in public education at various grade levels primarily teaching instrumental music as well as elementary music. Originally from Covington, LA , Dr. Pulling attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond where she earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1998. She earned the Master of Music degree with emphasis in music education and clarinet performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2003. 

In 2004, Dr. Pulling returned to Louisiana where she spent most of her career working in the St. Tammany Parish Public Schools as band director of Mandeville Jr. High School and L.P. Monteleone Jr. High School both in Mandeville, LA. In 2017, she began doctoral study and worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the music education area at Louisiana State University. She taught and assisted in undergraduate music education classes as well as assisted in the LSU School of Music Operations department. An accomplished clarinetist, Dr. Pulling performed as a member of the LSU Wind Ensemble during her doctoral studies. She graduated from LSU in 2021 with a PhD in music education and a minor concentration in wind conducting. Thereafter, she served on faculty as Visiting Instructor of Music Education at LSU from 2021-2022. 

Dr. Pulling has presented research at state, regional and national levels including the Society of Music Teacher Education conference in October 2023, Salt Lake City, UT, and the National Association for Music Education conference in November 2022, Washington, D.C. Her research interests center on music teacher professional development, instrumental methods along with health and wellness for music students and teachers. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Louisiana Music Educators Association, and the Louisiana Music Adjudicators Association.
