Betsy Cochran builds mathematical models of plant and animal populations to understand their long-term demographic dynamics. She is the author of a software package for demographers that computes both basic and advanced parameters for stage-classified matrix population models.
Dr. Cochran conducted research at the University of California at Davis, the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of Georgia, where she was Project Manager of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research group at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. She also taught mathematics at UC Davis.
She serves as the Coordinator of Undergraduate Research for NSU, chair of the Research Council, and represents NSU on the University of Louisiana System's Undergraduate Research Council. She is the current Richard Lounsbery Professor of Ecology and Mathematics in the Scholars' College. She was recognized by NSU for Faculty Excellence in Teaching (2013), Faculty Excellence in Academic Advising (2009), and Recognized Student Organization Advisor of the Year (2008). In 2007 she was named National Advisor of the Year for Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and currently serves as a member of the sorority's leadership team. She is also a member of the Board of the Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve.
Dr. Cochran teaches a variety of courses for the College, including Ecology, Statistics, Sociobiology, and a writing course on the Modern Synthesis. She has directed 85 undergraduate theses and served as second reader for 35 more. She also teaches Statistics and Research Methods in the Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology, where she has directed 4 Master's theses and 11 papers-in-lieu of thesis.
