Biography
Jackie V. Calhoun, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Health and Human Performance at Northwestern State University. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, with a minor in Psychology, from Louisiana State University in 2013. As a graduate student in the School of Kinesiology at Louisiana State University, Dr. Calhoun gained experience in the fitness and recreation industry as a Graduate Assistant for Fitness and Wellness with LSU University Recreation, followed by several years of higher education teaching experience as a Graduate Assistant in the School of Kinesiology. She received her Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University in 2016, followed by her PhD in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University in 2020.
Her research focuses on various sport psychology topics related to athlete psychological well-being and sport participation at various levels of competition. Specific research interests include the psychological processes involved with failure in sports and sports performance; the psychological and performance impacts of major athletic career transitions and injuries; psychosocial factors related to high-level sport involvement and the athletic recruiting process; and research methodology in sport psychology.
Dr. Calhoun has presented her research at international conferences, published her work in the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology (IJSEP), and received several writing awards, including the American Kinesiology Association (AKA) Graduate Student Writing Award in 2018, and the College of Human Sciences & Education Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2021.
From 2011 to 2014, Dr. Calhoun competed with the Louisiana State University Powerlifting Club, serving as it’s Women’s Team Captain from 2012-2013 when they won first place at the USA Powerlifting Collegiate National Meet. Dr. Calhoun also competed for one year with the Louisiana State University Softball Team from 2009-2010.
Dr. Calhoun lives in Shreveport with her husband, Zach, two children, Emma and Alex, and two dogs, Dani and Doug. She enjoys playing video games, watching sports with family and friends, traveling, and trying new foods.
